3 Things to Consider when hiring a web designer

So you know that you’re ready for a website. It may be a new site, it may just be that you need to update or upgrade your old site. Regardless of why you need a site, there are some things you need to know that will save you a lot of money when hiring a web designer.

1. Don’t be a sucker for a sales pitch?

Of course you want someone who believes that they can get you a high rank for specific search terms (keywords and phrases), but most of that will be done during your ongoing relationship after the fact. The initial focus of your website should be Google’s Number One concern – content.

2. Who is your business expert?

You are your business expert. You need to provide as much information about your business and your primary, secondary and alternative target markets as possible to your developer at the onset. You should work with your designer to build your web page. Clearly state what you want your page to look like and how you want it to feel. Provide a demographic image of your best customer or client. Give detailed information about who buys from you and who doesn’t. While keywords are the ammunition used for marketing on line, demographics provide the target.

3. Chose a web design and create the “scope” for your project

In tech terms, what you want is referred to as the “scope” of the project. Have your designer write down the scope and give you a site map and Service Level Agreement. Sign off on a contract that clearly states what you want your website to be and how your want your web design to appear and how much it will cost. Be aware that if you add additional elements to the scope of your project, it will cost you additional hours.
